Geopark

A geopark is a geographically defined area recognized for its internationally significant geological heritage. It is managed with a focus on protection, education, sustainable development, and includes tourism, conservation, and scientific research related not only to geology but also other aspects of natural and cultural heritage. The Mpoto Geopark is well-known world-wide for important fossil discoveries on Mammalian, Dinosaur and early Human Evolution.

Cultural Heritage Club Karonga

The patrons of Mpoto Geopark are members of the Cultural Heritage Club Karonga (CHCK). The CHCK represents 8 cultural institutions based in Karonga. And has developed new ways of cooperation between the participating organisations. It is committed to the preservation and promotion of Karonga’s cultural heritage, with a focus on traditional knowledge, indigenous practices, arts, oral histories, and youth involvement. CHCK operates through community events, school-based programs, exhibitions, and cultural performances, and serves as a platform for intergenerational learning and cultural pride.
