Mpoto Geopark

The term “Mpoto” means NORTH in Tumbuka Language. Mpoto refers to the fact, that the Geopark comprises Northern Malawi and the Northern Malawi Rift. Mpoto Geopark is situated in Karonga and Chitipa Districts and a small part of Rumphi District, and includes 5km width of water body of Lake Malawi.

What is a Geopark?

A geopark is a geographically defined area recognized for its internationally significant geological heritage. It is managed with a focus on protection, education, sustainable development, and includes tourism, conservation, and scientific research related not only to geology but also other aspects of natural and cultural heritage.
